When Barin came hobbling into the PAL Adoption Center, his front limbs twisted and mangled (the vestiges of broken bones healing improperly) we knew right away that he would be special, not only to our staff but also to our supporters.
Barin Shortly After Coming to PAL
Thanks to an outpouring of love and gifts for Barin, we have received the funds necessary to get him started on his long journey toward the pain free, carefree life he deserves. Our deepest heartfelt thanks go out to everyone who donated to the “Help Barin Heal” fund.
If this is your first time seeing Barin, here’s how he came to Palmetto Animal League. Barin was hit by a car. His owners told authorities they did not have the money to take him to a vet, so he was tied up outside… with two broken legs… for months on end. Despite the suffering he’s endured at the hands of humans, he is still the happiest, sweetest, most loving boy you’ll ever meet.
When Barin went to see his ortho specialist, we learned he is not a candidate for surgery to correct his severely fractured front legs. Since surgery is not an option, our goal is to rehab his left leg (which still has nerve activity) as much as possible, so he can walk upright versus the one-armed army crawl he manages with now. The ortho specialist explained that Barin’s right leg (which has no nerve activity) is neither hurting nor hindering him. In fact, it may help keep him balanced when he gets fitted for his new orthotics!
Barin Visits an Ortho Specialist
Barin’s path to recovery will be long and challenging, but a team of vets believes he can have an excellent quality of life. The key is to help him put his front paw down little by little, and his treatment over the next 6 months will include:
- Intense, specialized physical therapy seven-days-a-week (two days with a specialist in Savannah)
- A custom-made therapeutic sleeve to relive the pressure wounds that developed as a result of Barin walking on bone
- Therapeutic massage
- Custom-made leg orthotics to give him more mobility for different types of outings
